Dear Ben,

Just by chance I have, today, heard of the sad death of your Father.
Please accept my condolences.

Max and I were pupils at King Edward VI school in Stratford-upon-Avon.
We partnered regularly in the early 1970s with not infrequent success.
Our last match together was when we won the Stratford Annual Pairs trophy in 1974.

Although I'd not seen Max for over 40 year there are still memories.
Hours spent discussing strategy and bidding conventions, the occasional spat (like when I misplayed a double-squeeze at a tournament in Birmingham!) but plenty of convivial evenings over a pint or two talking about a plethora of subjects.

A particular memory was from 1973 when we'd won the weekly match on a Monday night in Haywards Heath. We set off separately next morning to play in Stratford that evening. I was on a solo motorcycle but Max hitch-hiked and arrived just 10 minutes before the match started. We won that one as well!

Your Dad was a fine and fascinating fellow. I am sorry to hear of your loss and I wish you well.
